I first saw the Great Barrier Reef in 2004. I had heard the stories, but never could I have imagined the abundance of colourful coral and sea life. In 2018 I visited the Great Barrier Reef to re-live some of those memories. What I found resembled more of a graveyard - the coral was bleached, the sea life was dissipating and I was undeniably deflated. What had occurred over the past fifteen years to turn this once eye-catching organism to a dull grey? Where had all the life gone? I started researching into what causes the bleaching effect of coral. It didn't take long to discover that bleaching is a stress response to the rising temperatures and high concentrations of toxic chemicals found in sunscreen. Two chemicals in particular, oxybenzone & octinoxate, cause adverse affects in coral at around 60 parts per trillion and are found in almost all commercially available sunscreens. They're so bad in-fact that Hawaii banned the use of sunscreens containing these chemicals in July of 2018 with Palau following suit. Further, youthful coral feeds by sucking up nano-meter sized organics. With the amount of micro plastics found in our oceans increasing, it is becoming more and more difficult for coral to mature before choking on plastic. Every day, thousands of people are lathering up completely unaware of the potential health risks chemical based sunscreens pose to themselves, as well as the reef networks they're travelling so very far to see. Slick Daddy Sun Block is our attempt at giving customers an industry leading option that is better for them and their families as well as the earth, by providing a truly sea-life & reef safe, biodegradable and sustainable product where profits go towards preventing plastics from ever reaching the ocean.
